How to play the Climate Call Card Game

  • Game idea and game rules →

The Climate Call Card Game involves placing cards in the correct order - from least to greatest climate impact.

To get rid of a card, it is necessary to put the card in the right place in relation to other cards.

The first team to get rid of all their cards wins.

A round takes about 10–20 minutes and is played by 2–4 teams with 1–3 players in each team.

    Recommended age: 12+

  • 1. Preparations

    1. Shuffle the cards and deal three cards to each team.

    2. The teams place the cards in a row in front of them with the dark blue side up.

    3. Place the remaining cards in a pile with the dark blue side up.

    4. Turn over the top two cards from the pile and place them next to each other with the back (where the emission number is written) facing up, in the middle of the table. These cards form the basis of the release line.

  • 2. The game's "emission line"

During the course of the game, the playing cards are laid out next to each other, so that they form a row: the emission row.

The cards in the emissions row must be placed in order from least to greatest climate impact.

The more cards that are laid out, the longer the emission line becomes, which makes it more difficult to place new cards in the right place.

  • 3. The course of the game

The team with the player who last rode the train may start. The team chooses one of their three cards (without turning it over) and guesses where on the emission row it should be placed.

The card is then turned over so that the emission figure becomes visible:

    A) If the team guessed correctly, the card is placed on the emission row and the turn passes to the next team.

    B) If the team guessed wrong, the card is put away. The team then takes the top card from the pile and places it in front of them with the dark blue side up. Then the turn goes to the next team.

  • 4. The winner of the game

The first team to get rid of all their cards wins.

When a team has placed all its cards on the emission row, the round is played so that all teams can make the same number of moves.

If more than one team then gets rid of their cards, the game continues one round at a time, by each team drawing a new card from the pile, until only one team succeeds in placing its card correctly - that team wins the game!

✓ Tip: Increase the difficulty by starting with more cards and/or keep misplaced cards on the discard row (but put them in the right place). The team that guessed wrong still gets to take a new card.

Some common questions

How have the emission figures on the playing cards been calculated?

To calculate the emission figures on the cards, we have used a calculation model that has been developed by researchers at Chalmers University of Technology.

Most of the figures that form the basis of the calculations come from scientific articles, reports from authorities and research institutes, and statistical databases.

In some cases, the calculations are based on qualified estimates and reasonable assumptions. All calculations are based on the most up-to-date data possible, and the reasonableness of the estimated emissions has been validated by comparing with other published figures.

In most cases, we have used average values, or "typical values", in order for the numbers to be as representative as possible. The emission figures on the cards have been rounded and should therefore not be regarded as exact and absolute, but rather as approximate and average.
