So why a card game about the climate?

Let's face it — it's not easy trying to convince yourself (or anyone) of the best climate choices if you want to protect the planet. Causes e.g. a visit to a festival greater climate impact than a flight to Stockholm?

That's where the Klimatkoll card game comes in.

The card game Klimatkoll is like an "independent party" that helps the players understand how what we consume in everyday life affects the climate, in an engaging and scientific way!

A card game about the climate is the secret behind your increased climate awareness

That's the difference between those who try to reduce their own and their environment's climate impact, and those who actually do it!

  • Without a card game about the climate

✘ Difficult to be climate smart

✘ Acquaintances do not listen to climate arguments

✘ Don't understand how I affect the climate

    ✘ Climate awareness

  • With a card game about the climate

    Easy to be climate smart

Acquaintances have their own climate knowledge

I contribute to a sustainable future

    The opposite of climate awareness

Do you like feeling the opposite of climate awareness?

All it takes is a deck of cards and 2 or more people…

This is how you play the Klimatkoll card game with your surroundings

  • Game idea and game rules →

The Klimatkoll card game involves placing cards in the correct order - from least to greatest climate impact.

To get rid of a card, it is necessary to put the card in the right place in relation to other cards.

The team that gets rid of their cards first wins.

A round takes about 10–30 minutes and is played by 2–4 teams with 1–3 players in each team.

    Recommended age: 12+

  • 1. Game preparation

    1. Shuffle the deck and deal three cards to each team.

    2. The teams place the cards in a row in front of them with the dark blue face up.

    3. Place the remaining cards in a pile with the dark blue face up.

    4. Turn over the top two cards from the pile and place them next to each other with the back (where the emission number is written) facing up, in the middle of the table. These cards form the basis of the release line.

  • 2. The game's "emission line"

During the course of the game, the playing cards are laid out next to each other, so that they form a row - the release row.

The cards in the emissions row must be placed in order from least to greatest climate impact.

As the players succeed in placing their cards on the emission row, it becomes longer, which makes it more difficult to place new cards in the right place.

  • 3. The course of the game

Which player last took a train holiday? - That person's team gets to start by choosing one of their three cards (without turning it over) and guessing where on the emission row it should be placed.

    Then the card is turned over so that the emission figure becomes visible;

    A) If the team guessed correctly, the card is placed on the emission line and the turn passes to the next team.

    B) If the team guessed wrong, the card is put away. The team then takes the top card from the pile and places it in front of them with the dark blue face up. Then the turn goes to the next team.

  • 4. The winner of the game

The first team to get rid of all their cards wins.

When a team has placed all its cards on the emission row, the round is played so that all teams can make the same number of moves.

If more than one team then gets rid of their cards, the game continues one round at a time, by each team drawing a new card from the pile, until only one team succeeds in placing its card correctly – That team has won the game!

✓ Tip: Increase the difficulty by starting with more cards and/or keep misplaced cards on the discard row (but put them in the right place). The team that guessed wrong still gets to take a new card.

Some common questions

How have you calculated the emission figures on the playing cards?

To calculate the emission figures on the cards, we have used a calculation model that has been developed by researchers at Chalmers University of Technology.

Most of the figures that form the basis of the calculations come from scientific articles, reports from authorities and research institutes, and statistical databases.

In some cases, the calculations are based on qualified estimates and reasonable assumptions. All calculations are based on the most up-to-date data possible, and the reasonableness of the estimated emissions has been validated by comparing with other published figures.

In most cases, we have used average values, or "typical values", in order for the numbers to be as representative as possible. The emission figures on the cards have been rounded and should therefore not be regarded as exact and absolute, but rather as approximate and average.

Who publishes the Klimatkoll card game?

The card game Klimatkoll is published by Klimatkoll Guldheden AB (Organ. no. 559145-0399).
